Leave Obesity Behind

Obesity is defined by the World Health Organization (WHO) as more “fat accumulation” than normal in the body, which may impair the health of individuals. Obesity is classified as follows according to body mass index (BMI): BMI between 18.5-25kg/m2 is normal, BMI is between 25-30kg/m2 is overweight, BMI is between 30-40kg/m2 is obese, BMI is 40kgM2 and above is classified as morbidly obese. The first-line treatment of obesity is diet and exercise, but the success rate is around 2%. Bariatric surgery, also called bariatric surgery, helps people with obesity to lose weight by limiting the amount of food they can consume. The goal is to improve health and quality of life, but success also depends on lifestyle changes such as diet and exercise.

What Is Obesity Surgery?

Obesity surgery, also known as bariatric surgery, is a surgical procedure designed to help people who are severely overweight and suffering from obesity to lose weight. This type of surgery is usually used when other methods of weight loss, such as diet and exercise, have not been successful in helping the individual to lose the desired amount of weight. Common bariatric procedures include gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy, and gastric banding. These procedures involve altering the size of the stomach, or parts of the digestive system, in order to limit the amount of food intake and help the body absorb fewer calories.

Why Is Obesity Surgery Done?

Obesity is not a simple excess weight, but it can cause very serious life-threatening diseases such as hyperlipidaemia (high fat content in the blood) diabetes (diabetes) hypertension and sleep apnoea, which shorten life expectancy if left untreated.

What Is The Success Rate Of Obesity Surgery?

The success rate of obesity surgery varies depending on various factors such as the type of procedure, the patient's age, their commitment to lifestyle changes, and their overall health. However, studies have shown that bariatric surgery generally leads to significant weight loss, with patients typically losing between 50-70% of their excess weight within the first two years after the procedure. Additionally, obesity-related health conditions such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and sleep apnea often improve or resolve after the surgery. It's important to note that obesity surgery is not a guarantee for weight loss, and patients must follow recommended lifestyle changes to increase their chances of success.

Suitable Patients For Obesity Surgery

It is suitable for those over the age of 18 who have a BMI over 40 kg/m2, who cannot lose weight with exercise and diet, or who have a BMI between 35-40 kg/m2 and have at least one additional disease related to obesity (such as hyperlipidemia, hypertension and diabetes).

What Are The Risk Factors For Obesity Surgery?

1- Bleeding is a serious complication that can be seen in obesity treatments as in every surgery, but this rate is very low (less than 1%) if performed by an experienced surgeon.
2- Leakage on the suture line (stapler line) (less than 2%), most of the time these leaks close spontaneously.
3- Weight regain may occur especially in super obese patients (1-15%).
4- Abscess formation may occur and this can be easily treated with the use of antibiotics and, if necessary, closed abscess drainage (percutaneous abscess drainage).
5-Death occurs in 0.2- 0.3%.
6- Inadequate weight loss may occur especially due to feeding high calorie liquid foods with milk shake.
7- Temporary hair loss due to vitamin B12 deficiency.
8- Gastro oesophageal reflux (GER) is a condition in which the stomach contents escape back towards the oesophagus.
