For A Healthier You.

Sleeve Gastrectomy is a weight loss surgery that involves removing a large portion of the stomach, reducing its size to a thin, banana-shaped sleeve. This procedure limits food intake and results in weight loss by reducing hunger hormones and altering the digestive process. Sleeve Gastrectomy is a minimally invasive procedure with a quicker recovery time compared to traditional weight loss surgeries. The procedure is recommended for individuals with a BMI of 40 or higher, or a BMI of 35 with comorbidities such as diabetes or sleep apnea.

Advantages of Sleeve Gastrectomy

    • It does not cause anatomical changes in the digestive system.
    • No malabsorption in the digestive system
    • The operation time and recovery time are very short (one hour surgery time 2-3 days hospitalization)
    • Since it is performed with a laparoscopic (closed) method, large incision scars do not occur in the abdomen.
    • Postoperatively, patients lose 60-80% of their excess weight within 12 months.
    • There is an improvement of 60-70% after the operation in co-morbidities.
    • Dumpiping syndrome, which is seen in gastric bypass, is not seen (characterized by nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fatigue and loss of appetite due to rapid passage of high-carbohydrate food into the small intestine)
    • It is a simpler operation than gastric bypass operation.
    • It can be safely applied to supermorbid patients with a BMI over 50kg/m2.

How Common Is Sleeve Gastrectomy Surgery?

Sleeve gastrectomy is a procedure that is applied quite frequently all over the world to lose weight in obesity surgery, only in the United States of America, over 200 thousand patients underwent sleeve gastrectomy for obesity surgery in 2019, but due to the risks involved, it is considered major surgery, so in order to perform this operation, BMI should be 40 and above, or in case of additional diseases (hypertension or type 2 diabetes) BMI should be 35 and above.

What Does A Sleeve Gastrectomy Do?

A sleeve gastrectomy is a type of bariatric surgery, commonly referred to as weight loss surgery, which is used to treat obesity. It is a minimally-invasive procedure, meaning that it requires fewer incisions than traditional open surgery and reduces the amount of time it takes to recover from the surgery.
The purpose of a sleeve gastrectomy is to reduce the size of the stomach to limit how much food can be consumed and to reduce hunger. The procedure involves the removal of a large portion of the stomach, leaving a smaller, tube-shaped stomach in its place. This smaller stomach is known as a gastric sleeve. The remaining portion of the stomach is permanently removed and cannot be reversed.
The surgery works by reducing the amount of food that can be consumed at one time and reducing hunger. It also works to reduce the amount of calories absorbed, as the smaller stomach has a lower surface area and therefore absorbs fewer calories.
There are several benefits to having a sleeve gastrectomy. It can lead to a significant amount of weight loss, which can improve health and quality of life. It is also a good option for those who are not candidates for other types of weight loss surgery, such as gastric bypass. Additionally, because it is a minimally invasive procedure, it requires a shorter recovery time than other types of bariatric surgery.

How Is Sleeve Gastrectomy Surgery Performed?

Sleeve gastrectomy is a weight loss surgery that is becoming increasingly popular. The procedure involves reducing the size of the stomach, which limits the amount of food the patient can consume at one time. It also reduces the production of the hunger-signaling hormone ghrelin, helping to reduce hunger. The surgery is performed laparoscopically, meaning a few small incisions are made in the abdominal wall, and a thin tube with a camera is inserted.
The surgeon then removes a large portion of the stomach, reducing it to a small tube-like shape. The remaining stomach is then sealed with staples or sutures, and the incisions are closed. The smaller stomach limits the amount of food the patient can consume at one time and reduces the hunger-signaling hormone, ghrelin.
When performing the surgery, the surgeon is careful to avoid damaging the stomach’s natural ability to absorb nutrients.
Sleeve gastrectomy is a safe and effective weight loss surgery that can help people lose a significant amount of weight. However, it is important to remember that the procedure is not a quick fix, and patients must be willing to make long-term lifestyle changes in order to maintain their results. If you’re considering sleeve gastrectomy surgery, speak with your doctor to discuss the risks and benefits.

How Long Does Sleeve Gastrectomy Surgery Take?

Sleeve gastrectomy is an operation that can be completed in a very short time such as approximately 1-2 hour by laparoscopic method.

What Are The Possible Risks Or Complications Of Sleeve Gastrectomy Surgery?

1- Bleeding is a serious complication that can be seen in sleeve gastrectomy as in any surgery, but if it is performed by an experienced surgeon, this rate is very low (less than 1%).
2- Leakage formation (less than 2%) in the sewing line (stapler line) often these leaks close by themselves
3- It is an irreversible surgery
4- There may be weight regain especially in super obese patients(1-15%)
5- Abscess formation may occur, which can be easily treated with the use of antibiotics and, if necessary, closed abscess drainage (percutaneous abscess drainage).
6- Death occurs at a rate of 0.2- 0.3%
7- Inadequate weight loss may occur due to feeding with milk shakes, especially high-calorie liquid foods.
8- Vitamin B12 deficiency temporary hair loss
9- Gastro esophageal reflux (GER) is the condition of the stomach contents to leak back towards the food.

Sleeve gastrectomy is a very serious operation. Like every surgical procedure, there will be some risks and complications, but these risks are quite low if the operation is performed in experienced doctors and well-equipped hospitals. Complications include; bleeding, infection, suture line leakage, embolism, re-expansion of the stomach, back weight gain, insufficient weight loss, vitamin deficiencies.

After sleeve gastrectomy, there may be a re-expansion of the stomach, but it never reaches its former size.
