This procedure limits food intake and results in weight loss by reducing hunger hormones and altering the digestive process. Sleeve Gastrectomy is a minimally invasive procedure with a quicker recovery time compared to traditional weight loss surgeries. The procedure is recommended for individuals with a BMI of 40 or higher, or a BMI of 35 with comorbidities such as diabetes or sleep apnea.

How Common Is Sleeve Gastrectomy Surgery?

Sleeve gastrectomy is a procedure that is applied quite frequently all over the world to lose weight in obesity surgery, only in the United States of America, over 200 thousand patients underwent sleeve gastrectomy for obesity surgery in 2019, but due to the risks involved, it is considered major surgery, so in order to perform this operation, BMI should be 40 and above, or in case of additional diseases (hypertension or type 2 diabetes) BMI should be 35 and above.

What Does A Sleeve Gastrectomy Do?

A sleeve gastrectomy is a type of bariatric surgery, commonly referred to as weight loss surgery, which is used to treat obesity. It is a minimally-invasive procedure, meaning that it requires fewer incisions than traditional open surgery and reduces the amount of time it takes to recover from the surgery.
The purpose of a sleeve gastrectomy is to reduce the size of the stomach to limit how much food can be consumed and to reduce hunger. The procedure involves the removal of a large portion of the stomach, leaving a smaller, tube-shaped stomach in its place. This smaller stomach is known as a gastric sleeve. The remaining portion of the stomach is permanently removed and cannot be reversed.
The surgery works by reducing the amount of food that can be consumed at one time and reducing hunger. It also works to reduce the amount of calories absorbed, as the smaller stomach has a lower surface area and therefore absorbs fewer calories.
There are several benefits to having a sleeve gastrectomy. It can lead to a significant amount of weight loss, which can improve health and quality of life. It is also a good option for those who are not candidates for other types of weight loss surgery, such as gastric bypass. Additionally, because it is a minimally invasive procedure, it requires a shorter recovery time than other types of bariatric surgery.

How Is Sleeve Gastrectomy Surgery Performed?

Sleeve gastrectomy is a weight loss surgery that is becoming increasingly popular. The procedure involves reducing the size of the stomach, which limits the amount of food the patient can consume at one time. It also reduces the production of the hunger-signaling hormone ghrelin, helping to reduce hunger. The surgery is performed laparoscopically, meaning a few small incisions are made in the abdominal wall, and a thin tube with a camera is inserted.
The surgeon then removes a large portion of the stomach, reducing it to a small tube-like shape. The remaining stomach is then sealed with staples or sutures, and the incisions are closed. The smaller stomach limits the amount of food the patient can consume at one time and reduces the hunger-signaling hormone, ghrelin.
When performing the surgery, the surgeon is careful to avoid damaging the stomach’s natural ability to absorb nutrients.
Sleeve gastrectomy is a safe and effective weight loss surgery that can help people lose a significant amount of weight. However, it is important to remember that the procedure is not a quick fix, and patients must be willing to make long-term lifestyle changes in order to maintain their results. If you’re considering sleeve gastrectomy surgery, speak with your doctor to discuss the risks and benefits.
